Description

Sebastiano Erizzo’ translation of the Timaeus, published in 1557 in Venice, was the first part of a broader editorial project lead by Girolamo Ruscelli, whose aim was to publish a complete edition of Plato’s Works in vulgar language. Erizzo was well-aware of the linguistic complexity of the Timaeus, in which Plato adopted a technical lexicon, and of its transposition in vulgar, a language which was recently codified through the works of Boccaccio and Petrarca. For this reason, Erizzo added to the translation his marginal annotations, which he considered necessary to fully understand the text.
