Description

August Immanuel Bekker studied in Halle by Friedrich August Wolf and was a member of the Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (since 1815) and of the Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (since 1833). He is the editor of the first modern complete edition of Aristotle’s works, but also edited a critical edition of Plato’s writings (London 1826). This edition includes both the Greek texts annotated from the manuscripts and different lectiones, that are integrated with the comments of previous interpreters (Serres, Cornarius, Thompson, Fischer, Gottleber, Ast, Butmann, Stalbaum and others).
