Description
The editio princeps of Plato’s work was published by Henri Estienne (Henricus Stephanus) in Geneva and includes 1578 in three large-format volumes under the title Platonis Opera quae extant Omnia. Stephanus compared the previous editio princeps of Manutius and Musurus (1513) and the two Basle editions (1534 and 1556), along with various other manuscripts for rendering the Greek texts. For the Latin translation, Stephanus did not adopt the standard text by Ficino, and commissioned Jean de Serres (Serranus) to prepare a new translation with comment. Plato’s Timaeus is to be found in the third volume. The system of reference deriving from this edition and used in modern editions of Plato is known as “Stephanus pagination”.
