Description

During the period of the Spinoza Renaissance, the German philosopher Salomon Maimon published a treatise on the World Soul. Interestingly enough, Maimon seems not to ascribe the World Soul’s notion to Plato. He rather takes into account many passages from (pseudo-) Timaeus Locri’s work on the World Soul with the purpose to provide an explanation of the theory of the world as a great organism and the idea of a World Soul which inhabits matter. Maimon’s work was also relevant for Schelling’s reading of Plato’s Timaeus and for the formulation of his Naturphilosophie in 1797-1798.
